This year, the 7th annual Seedy Saturday, co-hosted by the Friends and Margaret Roach of A Way to Garden website, is celebrating the coming of spring a little differently. We’ll be welcomed for hands-on workshops to the home of Turtle Tree Seed at Camphill Village in Copake, New York, the nation’s leading biodynamic seed company. (Tickets required; registration form below.)

Join Margaret and our neighbors and friends from Turtle Tree for this special opportunity to visit their charming and inspiring headquarters at Camphill Village and learn by doing how to successfully grow from seed. Proceeds from the event benefit nonprofit Turtle Tree and Friends of Taconic State Park, co-organizers of Seedy Saturday.

Camphill Village is a community of people, some with special needs, who live and work together caring for each other and the Earth, following practices inspired by the teachings of Rudolf Steiner.

Each attendee will go home with a flat of sown seeds.

You’ll also have a chance to shop from all 350 Turtle Tree seed varieties with expert staffers there to help make tough choices (unless you have room for all 350 in your garden!). Attendees are welcome to add on a tour of Camphill, or lunch at the Camphill coffee shop, and get to know this exceptional place better.

In your choice of two half-day sections (choose morning or afternoon when ordering a ticket), we’ll split our time between classroom learning and greenhouse “doing.”

1. Class time:

  • Intro to Camphill and Turtle Tree
  • What is Biodynamics?
  • When to start seed: general guidelines and using the Stella Natura calendar

2. Tea Break: From the Camphill Bakery, cookies, rolls & spreads, plus coffee and/or tea

3. Greenhouse time:

We’ll break into three groups and go over topics such as:

  • soil medium
  • moisture and watering
  • seed depths
  • How to fill and start flats
